A massive, limestone formation that emerged gradually during the
high cretaceous period in connection with the other great masses
of the Sorrentine peninsula, and was then radically disturbed
during the holocenie period by extreme shiftings that left the
layers skewed at angles of from 0 to 40 degrees (589 meters above
sea level).
The eastern and southeasters slopes of the mountain are severely
eroded and fall straight down to the sea, while a broad slope
descends towards Anacapri, holding a rich store of spontaneous
and imported vegetation, with more than 850 species.
A. MAREVNA, 1912
A group of us, all friends, went up on Mount Solaro and respectfully
said good-night to the sun. We stayed there the whole night through,
singing and talking about painting, music and poetry, until the
sun rose again.
The atmosphere on these warm Italian nights was full of romantic
idealism, as well as the marvellous Russian songs that the voice
of Fedor Salyapin boomed out, so that they reached even the night
fishermen, who listened in awe and wonder to that extraordinary
voice, that warm, mystic Russian voice that climbed up to the
stars.
Finally the Sun King rose in the sky, which was colored with enchanting
hues of joyful, flaming pink, and celebrated the beginning of
life. |
